Okay if I can divert from books/parenting theme for a moment and nerd out.
Nature is amazing. All creatures are amazing, and thus our Creator is amazing.
Can I tell you how?
Sovereignty and Balance.
For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities-his eternal power and divine nature-have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse. Romans 1:20
I came across the following video years ago, and it has become a family favorite. It is a video about the wolves of Yellowstone.
History Lesson- In 1907, the U.S. Biological Survey, which was the forerunner of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, under political pressure from the western cattle and livestock industries, this agency began a concerted program which eventually was called: Animal Damage Control. This predator control program alone killed 1,800 wolves and 23,000 coyotes in 39 U.S. National Forests in 1907.[3]
The gray wolf was one of the first species to be listed as endangered (1967) under the Endangered Species Preservation Act of 1966.[14] The Endangered Species Act obligated the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to develop restoration plans for each species designated as Endangered. The first recovery plan was completed in 1980 but gained little traction.
In January 1995, U.S. and Canadian wildlife officials captured 14 wolves from multiple packs east of Jasper National Park, near Hinton, Alberta, Canada. These wolves arrived in Yellowstone and were released into three acclimation pens. In March 1995, the pens were opened and between March 21 and March 31, 1995 all 14 wolves were loose in Yellowstone.[19] Seventeen additional wolves were released into the park in April 1996.
Sorry about that, like I said, I was going to nerd out a little…maybe a lot.
But here’s where the magic happens, once the wolves were introduced the ecosystem began to change. The video does a better job, but I will summarize. Because the wolves naturally started to hunt the deer and elk, the deer and elk began hiding higher in the hills and staying away from low lying areas.
With the grasslands that the over population of deer/elk created, now dispersed, more trees began to grow. More trees lead to more birds and beavers. Beavers created their own ecosystems welcoming more animals. Because of the trees and decrease in dear/elk traffic the rivers stabilized. So on and so forth.
It’s crazy amazing!!
Okay let’s bring it back around to sovereignty and balance.
Paul David Tripp in his devotional New Morning Mercies puts it this way. ‘Every day we are all greeted with mysteries…As much as we try to make sense of our lives, there are things that we simply aren’t able to understand… you and I will never find inner peace and rest by trying to figure it all out. Peace is found in resting in the wisdom and grace of the One who has it all figured out and rules it all for his glory and our good.'
This is what this wolf video reminds me of. It reminds me that the creator made things perfectly. Originally, he made the world without the death that is involved in the current food chain, which is what makes our hearts struggle with the predatory nature of wolves. But even after death entered at the Fall of Man (Genesis 3) he established a balance and a ‘circle of life’ that supports and flourishes in our broken world.
I’m just in awe and wonder of this God that can see it all. He can make sense of it all, and all of it has a purpose. The more science explores the more mysteries we find. It is never ending and supernatural just like the God of the Bible.
Rest in that a little today.
